Avoiding Widespread Serious Pandemic

Although we have advanced medical technology, we also have modern transportation systems, which allow the spread of any disease much faster than in earlier days (Bill Gates). If some highly transmittable disease would start spreading, the world would get sick in less than a year.

Any ideas that could help stopping or preventing such event, would be very desired.
